Event Type: chocolate
Chocolate is no longer restricted to the domain of the Dessert... Neither is Chocolate naturally sweet or creamy, it’s got so many delicious flavours, which is why we decided to create this event dedicated to Chocolate. Each course is designed to use Cacao in some form.
For almost 90% of its existence chocolate has been thought of as a drink and not a confection.. in its early existence it had no association with sugar.
Etymologists trace the origin of the word "chocolate" to the Aztec word "xocoatl," which referred to a bitter drink brewed from cacao beans. The Latin name for the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao, means "food of the gods."
Many historians believe that chocolate has been around for almost two thousand years, however recent research is pointing to an even older heritage. In fact in ancient cultures it was deemed so valuable that it was used as currency.
Sweetened chocolate didn't appear in Europe until adventures ventured to the Americas and sampled the native cuisine bringing it back for all the enjoy.
However initially it didnt suit European tastebuds and an early writer described it as a 'bitter drink for pigs' but once it was sweetened with honey Spanish culture quickly adopted it.
On this event we will venture thru the Mediterraneans dalliance with the Cacao bean. From an Italian chocolate ravioli, to an Andalucian Lobster with chocolate sauce...
